A Kidney from a 3D Printer

Prusa Research a.s.

This photo of a 3D printed kidney from Prusa Research seem like something from a book by Jules Verne. While the 3D printing of human organs is still a matter for the distant future, some hospitals are already using 3D printers. How? At the specialized IKEM hospital in Prague, they use the 3D printing of organs to help prepare for transplants. The model serves as an aid to doctors, allowing them to examine the organ before an operation, and revealing possible complications in advance. After the operation the donor can take away the model of their kidney as a souvenir.
