The essence of both science and art lies in the ability to look at ordinary things from a new perspective, leading the author down a hitherto unexplored path of knowledge. Sometimes a close-up view will help, while at others it is necessary to choose a filter that excludes the irrelevant. An example that combines both approaches is this photomicrograph of colorless vitamin C crystals, which, when inserted between two polarizing filters, glow with all the colours of the rainbow, thus revealing their secret crystalline structure.
