A METROPOLIS IN A GRAIN OF SAND

ON Semiconductor Czech Republic, s.r.o.

When the poet William Blake wrote "to see a world in a grain of sand", he had an inkling that a grain of sand could one day do great things. And it did! Thanks to the silicon that can be found in sand, today we really do see the world with a completely different perspective. In the form of microchips, it is the basis of all modern technology – mobile phones, computer technology and cars.

In this image taken with an electron microscope, you can observe the surface of a chip for a car’s power switch, where it controls lights, for example. The surface resembles the streets of a big city. However, in this case, the "streets" are only about one micrometre wide.
