More than a century ago, an ingenious, technologically advanced mechanism moved through the hall of the Imperial Spa in Karlovy Vary, transporting bathtubs filled with medicinal peat between floors. This device has long since vanished into the mists of time, but in spirit it has returned. The “Red Crab” has been created — a monumental machine weighing over 130 tonnes. With a few graceful movements, it transforms the hall into an ideal space for a concert, to show a film, stage a play or host a conference. Its structure conceals 62 gearboxes, 42 kilometres of cabling, 300 movable seats and 650 metres of LED lighting.

The hall was designed by the architects of the Petr Hájek Architekti studio. Working with dozens of experts in theatre technology and acoustics from the ATV Group, they brought it to life in 2023 over the course of eight months. Thus the spa hall breathes once more through technological transformation — just as it did in days gone by.
