Balancing Tunnel for Steam Turbine Rotors
Doosan Škoda Power a.s.
Every steam turbine rotor has to be perfectly balanced – much like the wheels of a car but on a vastly greater scale. Balancing takes place here, inside a huge vacuum tunnel, where rotors weighing as much as several tens of tons are spun at operating speeds of between 3,000 and 10,000 revolutions per minute.
The vacuum plays a vital role, dramatically reducing air resistance and energy consumption as well as preventing the formation of aerodynamic shock waves when the tip speed of some blades reach supersonic velocity. Thanks to these conditions, each rotor can be balanced with exceptional precision, safely and without risk of damage. Once installed, the rotors will run smoothly and efficiently, without vibrations, which is a key factor for the reliable generation of electric power.
